The Triangle and Other Avenues

It is not only the heavens which declare the glory of God and the firmament which showeth his handiwork, but the humblest flower and the least shell which, together with the mightiest objects in the heavens, are all made and act by means of a curve developed from the Golden Section.

William Preston, Illustrations of Masonry, 1772.

THE AVENUES AROUND THE WHITE HOUSE

Once I had discovered that the core of the L’Enfant Plan for Washington followed Golden Section geometry, I wondered if this applied to all the avenues in the city, especially as the avenues radiating out from around the White House and to the east of the Capitol appeared to have a geometry of their own. I began with an examination of the avenues around the White House.

Figure 43 was the next step in the development of the city’s Golden Section geometry: the line of Virginia Avenue, from points R, to H, to GW, is extended to point S on what is now 23rd Street. 23rd Street to 16th Street is 1344 yards – the unit of measure established for the city grid west of the Capitol. Point S was originally intended to be the base of a large public square. It is now occupied by the Department of State. The line through S to the ‘President’s house’, PH, and to Mount Vernon Square, MV, defines the orientation of New York Avenue according to the Golden Section geometry. But the actual orientation of the avenue differs from this because of the location of the White House.

As described earlier, the diagonal avenues deviate from the underlying geometry by the need for them to align to the entrances and not the centers of buildings. Both New York and Pennsylvania Avenues
